Learning Through Art (LTA), IRVAC's most cherished program, is committed to bringing art and cultural experiences to the youth of the Illinois River Valley of this Southern Oregon community. LTA began in the summer of 2003 with the Biscuit Fire Photography project. LTA has grown to include projects serving a large number of local young people throughout the year. LTA works closely with teachers and their curricula to bring hands-on experiences in art, culture, history, dance, music, and the environment. After-school programs have extended the opportunity for students to increase their participation in the arts.
LTA projects incorporate a local and global community perspective for the youth of the valley. Young people receive training in the arts from professionals and other community members in a positive and supportive environment. Projects are displayed at local schools, the library, and local businesses during IRVAC's Second Friday ArtWalk. The young artists participate in the ArtWalk and share their knowledge with the public. Through this program, young residents of the Illinois Valley gain a deeper understanding of other cultures and find venues to express their new found perspective of the world and themselves.
