Learning Through Art (LTA), a committee of IRVAC, is committed to bringing art and cultural experiences to the youth of the Illinois River Valley of this southern Oregon community. LTA began in the summer of 2003 with the Biscuit Fire Photography project. LTA has grown to include projects serving a large number of local young people yearly. LTA works closely with teache rs and their curriculums to bring hands-on experiences in art, culture, history, dance, music, and the environment. After-school programs have extended the opportunity for students to increase their participation in the arts. LTA projects incorporate a local and global community perspective for the youth of the valley. Young people receive training in the arts from professionals and other community members in a positive and supportive environment. Projects are displayed at local schools, the library, and local businesses during IRVAC's Second Friday ArtWalks. The young artists participate in the ArtWalks and share their knowledge with the public. Through this program, Illinois Valley youths gain a deeper understanding of other cultures and find ve nues to express their new found perspective of the world and themselves.
